Transforming Access to Medicines in Ethiopia

Yeteref Bet’s 2025–2030 Strategic Vision

Ethiopia’s healthcare system continues to face a critical challenge: ensuring reliable access to essential medicines and medical consumables. While the country has made progress through rapid population growth and expanding health infrastructure, persistent supply chain inefficiencies and heavy reliance on imports still create gaps in availability.

Yeteref Bet Pharmaceutical Importing Company, headquartered in Addis Ababa, is addressing this challenge head-on through a bold five-year strategic plan aimed at reshaping Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical landscape.

From Importer to Manufacturer

Founded in 2023, Yeteref Bet has rapidly positioned itself as a trusted pharmaceutical importer built on regulatory excellence and ethical service delivery. The company’s mission is to import, distribute, and ultimately manufacture quality-assured medicines and medical supplies that improve public health outcomes nationwide.

By 2030, Yeteref Bet aims to rank among Ethiopia’s Top 10 pharmaceutical importers while pioneering local production of cotton-based medical consumables such as gauze, bandages, and cotton rolls. This transition from importer to manufacturer is expected to reduce foreign currency outflows, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Ethiopia’s domestic pharmaceutical and industrial base.

Strategic Pillars for Sustainable Growth (2025–2030)

Yeteref Bet’s five-year strategy is anchored on seven interconnected pillars designed to ensure scale, resilience, and long-term impact.

1. Expanding Product Registration and Import Portfolio The company plans to achieve a 25% annual increase in import volume by diversifying suppliers across India, China, and Europe, ensuring consistent supply and competitive pricing.
2. Establishing Local Manufacturing Capacity Feasibility studies will guide the development of a pilot manufacturing facility by 2028, with partial local production targeted for launch in 2029.
3. Building Robust Distribution Networks Yeteref Bet will expand its reach across both urban and rural regions through digital inventory systems, targeting 30% growth in nationwide distribution coverage.
4. Ensuring Regulatory Excellence The company is committed to achieving ISO 9001 certification by 2027 while maintaining full compliance with EFDA regulations to strengthen credibility with institutional and public-sector buyers.
5. Financial Sustainability and Efficiency Operational efficiencies and risk-mitigation strategies are expected to grow margins by 20%, enabling reinvestment into expansion and social impact initiatives.
6. Strategic Partnerships Collaborations with global suppliers, NGOs, and government institutions will align Yeteref Bet’s operations with Ethiopia’s national health priorities.
7. Wholesaler Wing Expansion By institutionalizing its wholesaler operations, the company aims to professionalize bulk distribution, reduce logistics costs, and penetrate fragmented retail markets more effectively.

A Vision for Impact

Through its 2025–2030 strategic vision, Yeteref Bet is positioning itself not only as a pharmaceutical importer, but as a long-term partner in Ethiopia’s healthcare transformation—bridging supply gaps, supporting local manufacturing, and improving access to essential medicines for communities across the country.
